DEAR GUESTS

World leaders committed themselves to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda  (http://www.ilo.org/global/topics/ sdg-2030/lang--en/index.htm)  at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015. One of the main topics of the 2030 Agenda is changing the working environment to ensure environmental, social and economic sustainability. In this regard, Decent Work is defined both as a means and as a goal. The importance of Decent Work in achieving sustainable development is more specifically reflected in the SDG8  (http://www.ilo.org/global/topics/sdg-2030/goal-8/lang--en/index.htm) , defined as "promoting sustainable economic growth”, “full and productive employment and decent work for all. "Azerbaijan is actively involved in and firmly committed to the implementation of the SDGs. The ILO identified Azerbaijan as a focus country for the region in the implementation of the SDG8 and the 2030 Agenda. In this context, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Population of the Republic of Azerbaijan jointly with social partners and in cooperation with the ILO is planning to organize an international conference titled "Towards the Sustainable Development Goals: promotion of sustainable development and decent work on 21 May 2018”.

CONFERENCE

The international Baku Conference to be held on 21 May 2018 will provide an opportunity to highlight the progress made by Azerbaijan and the region in implementing the SDGs in a context of world of work tremendous transformations and cooperation with the ILO and the UN in general.

Being strategically placed in Trans-Caucasus and enjoying enviable climatic conditions and natural resources, Azerbaijan has been developing steadily and continues to make progress towards decent work. After the 2014-2015 challenges due to the fall in world oil prices and subsequent economic slowdown, growth is progressively resuming - from -3.1% in 2016, 0.1% in 2017 to forecasted 0.6-1% in 2018 and 1.3% in 2019.

Azerbaijan is now an upper-middle income economy, with GDP per capita above USD 4, 200. The country recorded reduction in poverty from 49% in 2003 to 5,4% in 2017. Azerbaijan has a capacity to become a leading country on a path of successful, socially oriented diversification of an oil-based economy. It is now well placed to become a hub for energy and transport corridors, and a potential hub for innovation, green economy and cultural exchanges.

Labour market situation in Azerbaijan is featured by a number of challenges, such as growing
